Homeless Outreach
Syme-Woolner’s Homeless Outreach program is delivered by an outreach coordinator who works directly with people experiencing homelessness, hidden homelessness (‘couch surfing’) or housing concerns such as eviction. Services are delivered through street outreach and one-to-one arrangements and through drop-in centers (including eglinton west drop-in, Jane’s Place drop-in). Support provided includes counseling, information, advocacy and crisis intervention, and high-support referrals. The program serves approximately 500 individuals each year. The coordinator also provides cross sector workshops for service providers and their participants. The program is complimented by our Harm Reduction Program.
Syme-woolner’s Homeless Outreach Coordinator sits on the steering committees of the Rent Project and the Informal Housing Network Project. Advocacy regarding housing and homelessness are achieved through the West End Coalition on housing & homelessness and the Home Coalition, which was successful in advocating for the needs of the homeless and under housed during the last provincial and municipal elections. In recent years Syme-Woolner’s Homeless Outreach staff has helped further community capacity to serve the homeless by participating in the opening Weston King Drop in Centre and the Informal Housing Network’s 2002 research paper “Living on The Ragged Edges” regarding the housing needs of the Latin American and Muslim communities of Toronto.
